1999 NRP Progress Report

The Interim Report of the National Reading Panel (NRP) details the Panel's progress from its origin in 1997, when Congress requested the formation of a national panel, through February 22, 1999. At that point in 1999, the Panel was still in the process of completing its charge of assessing the status of research-based knowledge of reading development and disability.

You may read the Interim Report and an introductory letter to Dr. Duane Alexander, the Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, from Dr. Donald N. Langenberg, the Chair of the NRP.

The Interim Report is NOT the final report of the NRP. On April 13, 2000, the NRP released the Report of the National Reading Panel, "Teaching Children to Read," which details all of its findings. You may view, download, or order the NRP Summary Report and the Reports of the Subgroups from this Web site.
